Dining and Kitchen Table Pads by Protex and Benson Mills

Protex table pads measuring 52 by 72 inches start at $14.99; larger pads that measure 52 by 90 inches cost $18.99 and 52 by 108 inch ones are priced at $21.99. These Protex table pads have consistently received top customer ratings (as compared to the Benson Mills vinyl pads), because they’re soft and flexible with a felt backing, not stiff foam They don’t buckle-up, but lay smooth on any dining room or kitchen table.

The Protex table pads are designed to do what you want a pad to do:

1. protect wooden, metal, or glass tables from scratches, scrapes, nicks, dents and stains.

2. absorb liquid spills so as not to damage the surface of, for example: an antique kitchen table top, and to avoid watermarks that glasses leave various wooden surfaces.

3. to absorb sound thereby diminish clinking and clacking on glass and/or metal tables.

4. to avoid slipping of decorative tablecloths while maintaining fluid draping and softness of a covered kitchen or dining table for formal entertaining or everyday use

5. a soft and flexible covering that doesn’t bunch or slip during mealtime, and isn’t stiff or difficult to spread over a table.

6. protects wooden table tops from moisture and stains, but also protects glass tops from heat exposure, as well as prevents cracking and chipping.

7. pads can be cut (with of scissors) to fit a kitchen table or left draping over the edge of a dining set (and additionally covered by an elegant tablecloth).

Protex table pads do what they were designed to do. They’re affordable and come in three practical sizes:

A. Protex table pads for round, square or rectangular tables: 52 X 72 inches
B. Protex pads for larger kitchen table models measuring 52 X 90 inches
C. Protex flexible coverings for dining tables 52 by 108 inch

Order the Protex pad that suits your needs or purchase a set of three. (Products may ship from Snow’s Home & Garden or Bed and Bath Outlet.)

What about Benson Mills vinyl table pads?

While Benson Mills offers a good selection of fine damask tablecloths for formal dining, as well as practical everyday coverings for a kitchen table where children may eat daily, their vinyl pads aren’t the best.

Although they come in 5 sizes and look similar to the Protex ones (and are priced about the same), they’re not as soft or easy to use – they tend to be stiff.

It may be possible to make use of these pads for tables where a fluid fabric cloth won’t be placed on top, say if another vinyl covering is required for a children’s eating area, but even so, it may be necessary to add a non-skid backing to prevent slipping or buckling.

There’s a spill-proof table cloth in the Benson Mills collection, that comes in sage, ivory and taupe, and appears to be practical for informal settings or areas that are likely to receive frequent spills by children. Despite the apparent heavy-duty appeal of the polyester/cotton material, the Benson Mills spillproof cloths have a propensity to lay less smoothly than the softer Protex ones, therefore we recommend the pads in the Protex series – and suggest Benson Mills for damask fabric tablecloths.
